As you may know, the Primary Care and Hospital Trust Boards are meeting to discuss proposals to reconfigure services at the Princess Royal and Royal Shrewsbury Hospitals.
I understand that no decisions have yet been made on any of the options being put forward and that there will be a public consultation exercise undertaken in the coming weeks.
This campaign is not an attack on Shrewsbury or the people of Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury is a great town with much to offer and, on many issues, Telford and Shrewsbury share common goals.
Nor is this about undermining the excellent health care currently delivered in Shrewsbury. Many patients travel to RSH for treatment and I am sure this will continue to be the case for many years to come.
This campaign is about protecting health services at the Princess Royal Hospital.
For too long local health bosses have put Shrewsbury first and treated Telford as the poor relation. They have failed to recognise that Telford is the economic powerhouse of the county as well as being the growing town. Within 20 years, Telford is set to be three times the population of Shrewsbury.
I want you to know that I am totally opposed to any moves to transfer services from the Princess Royal to Shrewsbury.
We should be planning health services on the basis of how the county will look in the next 50 years, not on how it looked 50 years ago.
People in Telford fought long and hard to get the Princess Royal Hospital and as someone who has lived here all of my life, I intend to fight to protect services in our town. That is why I have launched this "Say NO to Shrewsbury" campaign and I would be grateful if you could join me signing the online petition which I intend to submit as part of the consultation process.
I am confident that if we stand together we can win the fight to protect services at the Princess Royal Hospital.
"At last, a politician who isn’t afraid to say things how they really are. Shrewsbury have had it easy for too long and it’s about time Telford was put first."
J. Preistley, Aqueduct
"I support David Wright because I know this campaign is about health. Some people seem to be trying to twist it into something it isn’t. I have lived in Telford all my life and am sick of being treated as second class to Shrewsbury people."
H. Barry, Randlay
"David Wright is a local guy and I know he values our hospital more than any incomer jumping on a political bandwagon. Well done David, keep it up."
J. Hynd, Oakengates
"I have signed up because I have a young family and have to rely on public transport. It is a three hour journey from my house to Shrewsbury hospital."
P. Brown, Madeley
"I have worked in Telford for twenty years and seen the difference that investment in the NHS has made over the last 12 years. It is vital we don’t lose services from the PRH because many of my patients rely on having a local hospital where they can get treated rapidly. Telford has some of the most deprived areas in the country and moving services further away makes no long term sense"
Dr. T. McDonnell, Madeley
